Supporting Social Prescribing Link Workers in Obtaining Qualifications

Supporting Social Prescribing Link Workers in Obtaining Qualifications

Recently, NHS England published the Network Contract DES: Contract Specification 2024/25, outlining the requirements and entitlements for Primary Care Networks (PCNs) for the year. Among these requirements is the mandate for PCNs to ensure that SPLWs are enrolled in, undertaking, or qualified from appropriate training.

This stipulation underscores the importance of investing in the professional development of SPLWs to ensure they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively fulfil their roles to the required professional standard. Recognising the significance of this requirement, SPLWs are encouraged to proactively engage with their PCNs or Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to discuss strategies for obtaining the required qualifications.

To facilitate this conversation, we’ve drafted a template email that SPLWs can use to reach out to their PCNs/ICBs:

Email Template: Request for Support in Obtaining Social Prescribing Qualification

Subject: Request for Support in Obtaining Social Prescribing Qualification

Dear [PCN/ICB],

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention the recently published NHS England: Network Contract DES for the contract period 2024/25. As you may be aware, this contract specifies the requirement for Social Prescribing Link Workers (SPLWs) to be enrolled in, undertaking, or qualified from appropriate training.

I am eager to fulfil this requirement and further enhance my skills and knowledge in social prescribing. Level 3 and Level 5 qualifications are readily available, and I am keen to explore opportunities to pursue these qualifications.

Could you please provide information on the plans or support available to assist SPLWs like myself in earning qualifications in social prescribing? Your guidance and support in this matter would be greatly appreciated, as it would not only benefit my professional development but also contribute to the effective delivery of social prescribing services within our network.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Warm regards,
